From the sunlit fields of Figtree, Zimbabwe, to the vibrant cities of China, my journey
reflects resilience and cultural pride. I am Sijabulisiwe Mlalazi, a Zimbabwean
pursuing a Master’s in Computer Science at Xi’an Technological University, while
championing African heritage through Sjay Mobile Hair Studio.
A Journey of Perseverance
Raised in Bulawayo, education and hard work shaped my path. My grandmother, a
gifted hairdresser, taught me the art of African hairstyling (a legacy I brought to
China). During my undergraduate studies at Ocean University (2018–2022), I
founded Sjay Mobile Hair Studio, a flexible service specialising in African braids,
twists, and locs. What began as a part-time endeavour quickly grew, driven by
demand from the African diaspora and international clients eager to embrace our
traditions.
Impact in Asia Pacific (2018–Present)
Over the past years, Sjay Mobile Hair Studio has served over 100 clients with an
85% retention rate, a testament to the trust and quality of my work. As a mobile
salon, I prioritise(d) accessibility, travelling across Xi’an, Qingdao, and neighbouring
areas to bring authentic African styling to doorsteps. Clients frequently share how my
services reconnect them with their roots, turning hairstyles into heartfelt experiences.
Cultural Advocacy Beyond Styling
Beyond styling, I actively participate in workshops that educate communities about
the history and symbolism of African hairstyles. Collaborations with local artists and
entrepreneurs have further strengthened cross-cultural ties, positioning Sjay Studio
as a platform for unity.
Empowering Through Mentorship
To preserve these traditions, to date, I have trained and mentored five apprentices,
equipping them with technical skills and business acumen. This initiative ensures
African hairstyling thrives in Asia while creating opportunities for young women to
earn sustainably.
Balancing Academia and Enterprise
Managing a Master’s degree in Computer Science alongside entrepreneurship
highlights my discipline. I integrate technology into my business, using digital tools
for bookings, client management, and marketing. This blend of tech and creativity
allows me to innovate while staying rooted in cultural values.
Why This Nomination Matters
The “African Hair Salon of the Year” nomination honours not just my work, but the
resilience of Africa’s diaspora in Asia. In regions where African salons are rare, Sjay
Studio bridges cultural gaps, fostering pride and belonging. Clients often describe my
salon as a “home away from home”; a sentiment that fuels my mission.
Vision for the Future
I aim to expand Sjay Studio’s impact by launching a line of African-inspired hair care
products and establishing permanent salon spaces in Xi’an and other cities. These
steps will cement the studio as a cultural hub, celebrating Africa’s beauty and stories.
Closing Statement
This nomination is a shared victory for every client, apprentice, and supporter who
believes in the power of cultural heritage. Thank you for recognising how a simple
hairstyle can weave unity across continents.
